This weeks 'Whiskey Write Up' is an old favourite of mine, The Irishman - Founder's Reserve
This has long been one of my favourite Irish Whiskey's, and yet for reasons unknown, one of the lesser talked about Irish Blends on the market.
Founder's Reserve was Walsh Whiskey's first blend, with a unique mashbill consisting of 70% Single Malt and 30% Single Pot Still, triple distilled and matured in ex Bourbon Casks. This results in a fabulously smooth whiskey, with all the joys of a spicy pot still whiskey.
Hints of green apples and a peppery spice, make way to a beautiful butterscotch/toffee sweetness. Long smooth, woody finish, always leaves you wanting more! ⠀ Absolutely fantastic price point at around €35-€40. If you’ve never had this whiskey, you're missing out.. but you can easily change that! This is a superb Irish blend, with zero grain element. Perfect for a whiskey novice and the seasoned drinker alike. One that, in my opinion, should always be in the press.
You can find this whiskey, and all your whiskey needs, at our good friends James J Foxes via JamesFox.ie
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Zesty spice, black pepper, peaches and green apples.
Palate: Pot Still spice (cloves, cracked peppercorn and some nutmeg), dark chocolate and bourbon oak
Finish: Oak, toffee and butterscotch.
ABV 40% | 1litre
Fun fact: Inspiration for the brand came from the time Rosemary Walsh had run a ski chalet in France and would regularly treat guests to Irish coffees after evening meals. Moving back to Ireland, Bernard & Rosemary came up with an idea for a premixed Irish coffee, which came to be branded as The Hot Irishman. The Whiskey and success followed and the rest, as they say, is history. â € For more information on this, and Walsh's portfolio, visit walshwhiskey.com
