With holidays, long evenings and plenty of socialising, it is easy for a regular fitness routine to take a back seat during the summer months. But as September approaches and routines begin to settle back down, FLYEfit, Ireland’s premier gym chain, is encouraging people to get moving again.

Whether a few weeks have been spent away from the gym or motivation has simply started to slip, Nicole O’Donnell, Duty Manager at FLYEfit Swords, is recommending people to ease back into exercise and focus on building a routine that feels enjoyable and sustainable.

Speaking on the topic of heading back to the gym after the summer months, Nicole O’Donnell said “Getting back into a fitness routine after the summer doesn’t have to mean going all out from day one. The most important thing is to start small, find activities that are enjoyable and focus on building habits that can realistically be maintained. A little consistency goes a long way, and taking the pressure off can make getting back into exercise feel much more achievable”.

Nicole shares her five simple tips for getting back into the swing of things after the summer slump.

Start small

After a few weeks off, there is no need to go from zero sessions to five straight away. Ease back in and allow the body time to adjust. Even a short walk or quick workout is a positive step towards getting back into a routine.

Do workouts that are actually enjoyable

For the first week or two, choose exercises or classes that are genuinely enjoyable. It is much easier to establish a routine when training feels fun rather than like a chore. Finding an activity that is enjoyable makes it easier to stay consistent.

Make it easy

Take away some of the excuses by preparing in advance. Laying out gym clothes the night before, packing a gym bag or booking a favourite class ahead of time can all help remove some of the barriers to getting started. The less thinking involved, the easier it becomes to get to the gym.

Get something new

Sometimes a little refresh is all that is needed to reignite motivation. Whether it is a new gym set, a pair of training shoes or a new water bottle, a small purchase can bring some extra excitement to getting back into training. Feel good, train good.

Do it now for next year’s self

The work put in now is what the future self will thank for later. Rather than waiting until next summer to start thinking about fitness, the months ahead can be used to build healthy habits that are sustainable all year round. After all, a summer body is built in the winter months, with the ultimate goal being to feel confident and comfortable in the body all year round.

For anyone looking to get back into a fitness routine this September, FLYEfit is making the first step even easier. From tomorrow, Friday 28th, FLYEfit is dropping its joining fee completely, giving new members the chance to get started without the additional upfront cost. The offer will be running for a limited time only and can be availed of using code PAYDAY2026
