Despite the rise of streaming services and on-demand TV, Love Island continues to be appointment viewing for many Irish fans, according to new research from iReach Insights.

The nationally representative survey of 1,000 Irish adults found that 52% of Love Island viewers watch every episode live, while a further 31% catch up later the same day. The findings suggest that, even in an era of endless viewing options, the reality dating show continues to bring audiences together in real time.

Interestingly, only 7% of Irish adults are watching this year's series overall, but those who do are among television's most committed viewers.

Love Island vs the Women's World Cup

With the FIFA Women's World Cup also capturing viewers' attention, the research explored how audiences balance the two events.

Among those following either competition:

  • 25% choose to watch Love Island live before catching up on the football afterwards.

  • 34% watch the football live and catch up on Love Island later.

  • 23% admitted they genuinely couldn't choose between the two if forced to give one up.

Viewers Split on the Winners

Ahead of the latest villa departures, opinion was evenly divided on who would take the Love Island crown.

According to the survey:

  • 24% backed Ellie and Finley.

  • 24% believed Lola and Sean would win.

  • 12% tipped Julia and Lorenzo.

Live TV Still Has Its Place

The findings highlight that while streaming has transformed viewing habits, major entertainment programmes can still encourage audiences to tune in together rather than watch on demand.

The research was carried out by iReach Insights as part of its nationally representative Consumer Decisions Omnibus survey between 9 and 16 July, with a sample of 1,000 Irish adults.
