Up next for a Whiskey Write Up is the incredible Powers John's Lane 12-year-old pot still Irish whiskey. I would find it hard to find an Irish whiskey fan who has yet to try John's Lane. It is a Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey of outstanding flavour and complexity, which provides a perfect tribute to the Pot still style of Ireland’s most loved whiskeys.
The whiskey itself gets it's name from the address where the Powers Distillery was built, just off Thomas Street in Dublin in 1791. The Powers John’s Lane Distillery was renowned for it's Pot Still Irish whiskeys.
I have been a Powers fan for a long time, and although they have discontinued some fantastic whiskeys such as (and one of my favorite drams) the Gold Label 12-year-old and the signature release pot still, in the past couple of years they have released the first ever Rye Irish Whiskey and the John's Lane Cask Strength. I'm looking forward to what powers might have coming down the line!
Johns Lane 12-year-old is the first expression of a Powers Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey and celebrates the origin of the Powers whiskey tradition by providing a glimpse of the whiskey style that made Powers famous. The whiskey has been matured for at least 12 years in first fill American Bourbon Casks with a small contribution of distillate which has been matured in Oloroso Sherry Butts. Straight away when you pour this whiskey, on the nose you get the renowned toasted wood notes that is associated with powers, along with some fruity aromas and marshmallow. On the pallet the pot still spice comes straight in along with vanilla and honey sweetness.
Even with the ABV at 46%, this is such a surprisingly soft and smooth finishing whiskey. I don't think I could recommend this dram anymore.
NOSE: An abundance of earthy aromas, leather, tobacco with layers of charred wood, dark chocolate and treacle toffee.
TASTE: Full bodied spice front followed by vanilla, honey and dried apricot.
FINISH: Lingering honey sweetness on toasted oak. ABV: 46%
