Boann Distillery Scoops 2 Golds at the 2021 Irish Whiskey Masters
Boann Distillery has added to it's haul of awards this year by scooping two Golds at the 2021 Irish Whiskey Masters.
The family-owned distillery in Co Meath was awarded a gold medal in the Single Grain Super Premium round for The Whistler Mosaic, while The Whistler Irish Honey won gold in the Flavoured Irish Whiskey category.
Infused with honey harvested from the family’s apiary, the Whistler Irish Honey was described by judges as “very sweet and undeniably a crowd‐pleaser” with its “river of warm caramel and cream.”
The Spirits Business Irish Whiskey Masters 2021 were held in London with each entrant bagged and labelled anonymously to ensure each whiskey was judged solely on the liquid inside the bottle.
Entries were up by over 60% on last year, with 98 whiskies from 27 different companies.
“We are so proud to see our Whistler range recognised and rewarded once again by industry, with these golds bringing the Whistler brand's award tally to over 40," said founder and managing director, Patrick Cooney.
“To receive two gold medals from only two entries and within a very competitive Masters competition is a fantastic achievement and testament to the quality of our product as well as the innovation and commitment of our team.”
Irish whiskey is experiencing an astonishing revival, generating a 140% increase in sales between 2010 and 2020, according to the Irish Whiskey Association (IWA).
The IWA’s Irish Whiskey Global report showed 96% of sales last year were in markets outside of Ireland, and the US alone accounts for 43% of the spirit’s sales. Irish whiskey sales in the US generated US$1.1 billion worth of revenue for distillers in 2020.
The Whistler range is exported to more than 25 countries across the world.
The Whistler Mosaic retails for €46.95 through boanndistillery.ie and The Whistler Irish Honey can be purchased e for €32.95.
This week’s awards for the distillery comes just days after Boann announced it is giving whiskey lovers the chance to buy rare samples of its Single Pot Still new make spirit - distilled using recipes dating back up to two centuries.
500 limited edition packs of ten 50ml bottles, each containing a different new make distillate were recently released for sale for €135 and are likely to become a collectors’ item among serious whiskey enthusiasts.
