Bookies report flurry of Oscar support for Paul Mescal on his return to Dublin

Patriotic punters are rallying behind Paul Mescal to win the ‘Best Actor’ gong at this year’s Oscars, according to Ladbrokes.

Fans descended in their droves on Dublin’s Lighthouse Cinema last night to catch a glimpse of the movie heartthrob at the launch of the Dublin International Film Festival and the bookies has since reported a flurry of support for the Kildare native in the ‘Best Actor’ market.

Mescal can currently be backed at 33/1 to receive the award for his role in ‘Aftersun’. Although he faces stiff competition with ‘Elvis’ star and recent BAFTA winner Austin Butler the joint-favourite at even money, alongside Brendan Fraser. Fellow Irish movie star Colin Farrell is rounding off the top three as things stand at 6/1.

Nicola McGeady of Ladbrokes said: ''Paul Mescal sent fans into a frenzy at the premiere of ‘Gods Creatures’ in Dublin last night and following the heartthrobs hotly anticipated return to Ireland, we have seen a recent flurry of Oscars support for the Kildare man.''
