Has Wellness Become Too Complicated? 5 Simple Ways to Reset Your Routine

Wellness has become a world of its own. Between the latest supplements, complicated skincare routines, expensive products and countless social media trends promising to transform our lives, it can be difficult to know where to start.

Looking after ourselves shouldn't have to be complicated, time-consuming or expensive. Sometimes, the smallest changes to our daily routines can help us slow down, make a little space for ourselves and bring a greater sense of calm to busy days.

That's the approach championed by Barbara McAteer, an award-winning holistic therapist with more than 30 years of experience and the founder of Irish botanical brand Josie's Botanicals.

Barbara believes that wellbeing doesn't have to involve a complete lifestyle overhaul. Instead, simple daily rituals, from taking a few quiet moments in the morning to creating a relaxing evening routine, can help us become more mindful of how we feel.

So, if your wellness routine has started to feel more like a list of chores than a way to look after yourself, here are five simple ideas inspired by Barbara's approach.

1. Create One Daily Ritual, Not Ten

It's easy to fall into the trap of believing we need a perfect morning routine or an elaborate evening ritual to feel our best. In reality, starting small can be much more manageable.

It might mean enjoying a cup of herbal tea without distractions, taking five quiet minutes before bed or spending a little extra time applying your favourite facial oil.

The important thing is to find something that feels enjoyable rather than another task to tick off your list.

A small ritual that fits naturally into your day is far easier to maintain than a lengthy routine that leaves you feeling overwhelmed before you've even started.

2. Breathe Before You Reach for Your Phone

For many of us, checking our phones is one of the first things we do in the morning. Before our feet have even touched the floor, we're already catching up on messages, emails and social media.

What if we gave ourselves a few moments before diving into the day's notifications?

Taking some slow, comfortable breaths before reaching for your phone can be a simple way to pause and collect your thoughts. You don't need a meditation app, a special space or a lengthy mindfulness session.

Just give yourself a moment to wake up, breathe naturally and ease into the day at your own pace. It might seem like a small change, but creating a little breathing room before the daily rush can help make mornings feel less frantic.

3. Rediscover the Power of Touch

Our everyday skincare routines can quickly become something we do on autopilot. Cleansing, moisturising and getting on with the day can all happen without a second thought.

Barbara encourages bringing a little more mindfulness to these familiar moments.

Whether you're gently massaging your face while applying moisturiser or taking a few moments to rub hand cream into your hands, slowing down can turn an ordinary task into a more relaxing experience.

You could also spend a few moments gently massaging your hands, neck or shoulders if it feels comfortable. Botanical oils can be part of this ritual, too, if they're suitable for your skin and something you enjoy using. It's less about adding another product to your bathroom shelf and more about taking time to enjoy the process.

4. Create an Evening Wind-Down Ritual

After a busy day, switching off isn't always easy. Even when we're physically tired, our minds can still be racing through tomorrow's plans, unfinished jobs and everything else demanding our attention.

Creating a simple evening wind-down routine can help signal that it's time to slow down.

Try putting your phone aside for the last 20 minutes before bed, enjoying a warm bath or shower, reading a few pages of a book or dimming the lights to create a calmer atmosphere.

If you enjoy aromatherapy, a familiar scent such as lavender may also become a comforting part of your evening routine. Always follow product instructions and use essential oils safely.

There's no need to incorporate every suggestion. Choose one or two things that help you feel relaxed and make them your own.The aim isn't to create another perfect routine to follow, but to give yourself permission to step away from the day's demands.

5. Let Nature Do Some of the Work

Wellness doesn't always require a trip to a spa, a new purchase or a carefully planned activity. Sometimes, the simplest option is to get outside.

A walk in the fresh air, a few minutes in the garden or simply opening a window and taking a moment to notice the world outside can offer a welcome break from screens and everyday distractions.

You don't need to walk a particular distance, hit a step target or turn it into another fitness challenge. Even a short break outdoors can be a pleasant way to change your surroundings and clear your head. When life gets busy, we can forget how refreshing it feels to pause, notice the changing seasons and spend a little time away from our usual routines.

Sometimes, wellbeing starts with something as simple as stepping outside.

Wellness Should Work for You

Perhaps the biggest lesson is that looking after yourself doesn't need to be another thing to get right. You don't need a cupboard full of supplements, a ten-step skincare routine or a perfectly organised morning to make time for your wellbeing. You simply need to find small habits that feel realistic, enjoyable and right for you.

For Barbara McAteer, whose work through Josie's Botanicals draws on decades of experience in holistic therapy, that means returning to the basics: breathing, touch, rest, nature and the little rituals that help us slow down.

So, rather than trying to change everything at once, why not choose just one small thing to introduce into your day this week?

It could be putting your phone down a little earlier, taking a short walk or enjoying a quiet cup of tea without distractions. Because sometimes, the best place to start with wellness isn't doing more. It's making a little room to breathe.
