ODEON Cinemas has today revealed that Irish moviegoers consumed an impressive 694,721 popcorn bags (111 tonnes) across its cinemas nationwide in 2025, which is enough to fill almost half an Olympic-sized swimming pool, cementing popcorn’s status as the ultimate big-screen snack. In 2025 alone, the Irish customers also consumed a total of 9,708 litres of butter on their popcorn, which is the equivalent of around 65 bathtubs.

As part of the celebration, ODEON Cinemas also surveyed Irish people to uncover the nation’s favourite popcorn flavour. Salty popcorn has officially taken the top spot at 48% to claim the crown as Ireland’s most-loved popcorn flavour, followed by buttery at 39% and sweet at 14%.
The love for popcorn runs even deeper in Ireland when compared to the UK as new research from ODEON Cinemas shows that 39% of Irish cinema guests purchase popcorn, which is more than double the 19% of customers in the UK, underpinning how much the Irish love to munch their way through a film.
In 2025, ODEON sold just 5 tonnes of cheese sauce across more than 100 cinemas in the UK, compared to a staggering 29 tonnes of nacho cheese sauce across just 12 cinemas in Ireland, highlighting Ireland’s love of cheese.
Irish audiences are also leading the way when it comes to home delivery ODEON snacks, which is available at select ODEON locations through Deliveroo, Uber Eats and Just Eat, as the top three cinemas for home delivery across all ODEON cinemas are located in Ireland. Popcorn also dominates the home delivery orders in Ireland ahead of nacho cheese and other delicious ODEON snacks.

To celebrate National Popcorn Day on January 19th, ODEON Cinemas will be offering 50% off all popcorn sizes for the whole day (does not include combos, individual only), giving film fans the perfect excuse to enjoy their favourite movies with the nation’s favourite snack in hand. The special offer will be available at participating ODEONcinemas across Ireland for one day only.
Speaking about the celebration, Javier Perez, Marketing Coordinator at ODEON Cinemas ROI & NI, said today "Popcorn is a huge part of the cinema experience and we love seeing just how passionate Irish audiences are about it. Selling 694,721 bags of popcorn in one year is an incredible milestone, and National Popcorn Day is the perfect opportunity to say thank you to our guests with a great-value treat.”
With an exciting lineup of blockbuster releases hitting the big screen, ODEON Cinemas invites audiences nationwide to celebrate National Popcorn Day by grabbing a box of freshly popped popcorn and enjoying the magic of cinema.
