Aldi encourages the nation to sign up for the Irish Cancer Society’s ‘Marathon in a Month!’

Aldi has today been announced as the sponsor for the Irish Cancer Society’s fundraiser – Marathon in a Month! The fundraiser will see participants across the country walk, jog or run the distance of a marathon (42km) over the course of the month of July, in order to raise much-needed funds to provide essential supports to patients and families nationwide. Aldi is calling on people to let their friends and family know, and sign up for this fantastic fundraiser!

All monies raised will be used to help the Irish Cancer Society meet increased demand for its free services for cancer patients and their families across the country. The Irish Cancer Society continues to provide vital services for cancer patients throughout the current pandemic. Among these services and supports are the Support Line, Night Nursing, remote counselling, Volunteer Driver Services and the Children’s Fund. The campaign is being supported by Irish television presenter, Síle Seoige and Leinster and Ireland rugby player, Rory O’Loughlin.

It’s so easy to register and costs nothing!

Commenting, Rosemary Simmons, National Fundraising Lead at Irish Cancer Society said: “People in Ireland affected by cancer need the support of our services now more than ever. Each year in Ireland, an estimated 45,000 people receive a cancer diagnosis. The vital services the Society provide rely on the generosity of others, especially the public and our partners. We are delighted to have the continued support and sponsorship of Aldi, their staff and customers at this time. We’re really looking forward to the Marathon in a Month fundraiser and can’t wait to see everyone clocking up the kilometres!

Marathon in a Month brand ambassador Síle Seoige said: “The services that the Irish Cancer Society provide are life-changing for people affected by cancer. I know how very fortunate I am to be alive, healthy and happy surrounded by my family. The various teams within the organisation are like an extension of so many people’s families and fundraisers such as this will enable the charity to continue to provide vital services across the country to those that need it. I will be walking, cycling and maybe even jogging the 42km and encouraging people to get moving and fundraise to help the Irish Cancer Society in July

Caroline’s Story:

Last year, siblings Caroline, Helen and Jack O’Dea from Malahide in Co. Dublin took part in Marathon in a Month in honour of their wonderful Mom Gina, who sadly passed away a few weeks previously, 18 years after first being diagnosed with multiple Myeloma. Caroline says the challenge meant so much to them as a family, as it was a way for them to come together to do something good, but also as a way to process the grief of Gina’s recent death.

For the three of us, Marathon in a Month was both physically and emotionally challenging, but it was great because it allowed us to channel our grief and energy into something useful”.

The siblings decided to take on the challenge, as thanks for the support they received from Irish Cancer Society Night Nurse, Leslie, during Gina’s final days at home.

We were fortunate to have a Night Nurse from the Irish Cancer Society staying with us. The kindness Leslie showed our family, on what was the most difficult night of our lives, was unparalleled. She made what could have been an incredibly stressful situation calm and peaceful. Her kindness made everything so much more manageable, and we are incredibly grateful for this support”.

Caroline says that their mom Gina, would be so proud of them for taking on Marathon in a Month, as both running and charity fundraising were a huge part of Gina’s life. Caroline, Helen and Jack will be taking part in this year’s Marathon in a Month and encourage everyone to get involved.

Slán go fóill,

Danny
