2021 is another staycation/holiday at home year for Irish holidaymakers, with almost 90% of those who took part in a recent Aldi survey saying they are booking a staycation/holiday in Ireland this year. Aldi asked participants what they want - what they really, really want when they take to the highways and byways of Ireland for their staycation, with some surprising results!
39% said that they would be staying in self-catering, camping, or mobile home with more people than ever looking at the camper van as a Staycation option. 40% said they would pick up essentials at a supermarket with over half those surveyed (57%) saying they would consider Click & Collect or Deliveroo for their grocery shop whilst on holiday.
There are 145 Aldi stores nationwide with 17 now offering a Click & Collect service, so whether you’re thinking of heading to Connemara (Aldi West City Retail Park Galway)or the Cliffs of Moher (Aldi Ennis) try out Aldi’s Click & Collect* service and pick up your shopping when you reach your Staycation destination. This saves the hassle of trying to keep food fresh while journeying to your destination and leaves more time to relax and enjoy your holiday! A number of Aldi stores around the country also offer Deliveroo** meaning if you forget anything you can have it delivered straight to door!
Items we expect to find in our holiday rentals:
When it comes to self-catering accommodation, there are a few things that we Irish take as a given – the survey revealed that Irish people feel that bin bags, toilet paper, cleaning products, milk, coffee, sugar, bottled water, matches, condiments, and of course teabags should be supplied, along with good kitchen equipment (corkscrews, tin opener, sharp knives) and hairdryers!
Items we don’t expect to find, but would be welcomed!
Items that are not expected, but that would certainly bring a smile to our faces if we were to find them in our self-catering accommodation included: picnic baskets, bottles of bubbly (award winning Veuve Monsigny Champagne €19.99 of course), Wi-Fi, cocktails shakers, Netflix, ice machines, hot tubs, BBQs and as we have all become baristas during lockdown - a coffee machine!
Our favourite places to holiday!
The Wild Atlantic Way features strongly when people were asked for the location of the most breath taking holiday they've ever had in Ireland. From the beautiful Blasket Islands to incredible Inishbofin, from wonderful West Cork to delightful Donegal, the West coast of Ireland won out!
Celebs we would love to holiday with!
What do Graham Norton, Amy Huberman, Doireann Garrihy, Pierce Brosnan, Henry Cavill, Cher and Chris Hemsworth all have in common? They were among the responses given by people when asked which celebrity they would most like to accompany them on a staycation/holiday in Ireland! Others names included Niall Horan and Ariana Grande (great for singalongs around the campfire), Stephen Fry and Joanne McNally (providing comedic commentary) and RuPaul (sheer entertainment!).
The survey also revealed:
• 81% of people plan on going on holiday for a week or less, with 12% going for more than 1 week and 7% going for more than 2 weeks
• 29% plan on doing a big shop and cooking most of the time
• 40% plan on picking up essentials in the supermarket for their holiday
Aldi Ambassador Trisha Lewis (Trisha’s Transformation) said,“I’m delighted to be involved with Aldi’s staycation campaign this summer. There will be so many of us exploring Ireland over the next few months and shopping at Aldi really makes holidaying at home that bit easier as they stock all your Staycation necessities and have great services like Click & Collect and Deliveroo which I plan to use while on my getaways. I will be providing tips and tricks to help you stay on track while on the go and meal suggestions when working with limited equipment. All we need now is some sunshine to go with our wonderful Staycation plans!”
