Lidl Ireland has issued a final call for entries from charities, primary and secondary schools, youth groups and community groups to its 2026 Green Fund. With the May 18th closing date for applications, the retailer is urging local environmental champions to submit their projects to help safeguard Ireland’s natural heritage.

The initiative, developed in partnership with Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI), is designed to empower grassroots projects that tackle climate change, promote biodiversity, and support sustainable living. The fund offers a flagship top prize of €25,000 for a standout national project, with a further €75,000 to be distributed among impactful regional initiatives across every county in Ireland.

The urgency of the fund comes at a critical time for the environment. Recent climate data confirms that Europe is the fastest-heating continent in the world, warming at twice the global average rate. Following Ireland’s warmest summer on record, the need to build resilient ecosystems and protect local flora and fauna has never been more pressing.

Calling on entries David Gillick, Irish International Track & Field Athlete and Lidl Ireland’s Crivit Ambassador said: "As the Lidl Crivit ambassador, I’m a firm believer that to perform at our best, we need a healthy environment to move in. The Lidl Green Fund 2026 is a fantastic initiative that empowers local communities to protect their ‘home ground,’ ensuring we have vibrant, sustainable green spaces for generations to come. It’s about taking an active lead in sustainability, and I’m proud to support a project that invests so directly in the health and future of our local Irish neighborhoods."

Highlighting the submission deadline of Monday 18th May Elaine O’Connor, Head of Sustainability at Lidl Ireland & Northern Ireland, added: "We have seen an incredible response since opening the fund, but we know there are still so many fantastic local projects out there that just need a financial boost to make a real difference. With the application window closing in just two weeks, I urge any group with a vision for a greener community to get their entry in now. Whether it’s a biodiversity garden or a waste-reduction initiative, we want to help you bring those sustainable dreams to life."

Lidl Ireland invites applications from:

  • Registered Charities

  • Primary and Secondary Schools

  • Community & Youth Groups

Projects should focus on key environmental pillars, including Climate and Biodiversity, Circular Economy (waste reduction), and Sustainable Living.

The search for 2026’s winners follows the success of last year’s national champion, Clonakilty’s "Kids’ Food Revolution." The project utilised its €25,000 grant to scale a "Grow, Cook, Eat" programme, providing primary school children with hands-on horticulture and culinary skills. Beyond the top prize, the inaugural fund supported a diverse range of actions, from repair cafés and community gardens to biodiversity support for therapeutic autism units.

Lidl Ireland’s commitment to sustainability was recently reaffirmed by its ranking as the Most Sustainable Retailer in the Ireland RepTrak® Sustainability Index 2025 and receiving the Repak Resource Awards Overall Award for leadership in circular design and recycling.
