Aldi announces winner of Chief Easter Egg Tasting Officer role!

Aldi has announced that Aneurin Moorthy from Sutton in Dublin is the winner of its Chief Easter Egg Tasting Officer role!

Aneurin, who was entered by his wife Ruth, won FREE chocolate in the form of Easter eggs, and a €500 Aldi Gift Card in exchange for tasting chocolate. The role involved tasting, rating and reviewing a selection of Aldi’s 2021 Easter Egg range!

When asked why she nominated her husband for the role, Ruth said: “As long as I’ve known Aneurin he has been infatuated with chocolate and is a complete chocoholic. The photo I sent to highlight this will show his expression of pure love when he got to design his own bunny in a chocolate factory. Aneurin is an Anaesthetist in the Mater hospital and I’m a nurse. We have worked really hard over the last year due to the pandemic whilst also having to cancel our honeymoon and getting no chance to celebrate our marriage. We really have had very little to keep us going and our dog and chocolate have been our only sanity. This would make him so genuinely happy.”

Here are the results of Aneurin’s Taste Test!

Roisin’s Irish Honeycomb Easter Egg €7.99/270g

“This egg was relatively easy to crack. The top and the bottom of the egg are quite thick but you can crack the middle of the egg easily. I would describe the texture of this egg as crunchy and grainy with salty and milky undertones. Upon opening the box the aroma was one of cocoa. The special thing about this egg is it is just the right degree of sweetness to be very pleasant without being sickly or overpowering. The combination of melting in your mouth accompanied by the crunchy pieces of honeycomb is very appealing. There is the added treat of 5 salted caramels with this egg. The presentation of this egg was very appropriate as features yellow, an Easter colour and a colour associated with honey to match the honeycomb! Overall, I’d highly recommend this egg. It was one of my top two favourites.”

Moser Roth Ripple Egg - Belgian Milk Chocolate and Salted Caramel €4.99/200g

This egg was easy to crack overall. Upon placing a piece in your mouth you immediately notice the milky texture combined with a slight element of salt. The sensation is slightly crunchy and the chocolate melts in your mouth and is quite soft. There are also hints of caramel as expected. The design of this egg is quite eye catching with a ripple effect surface laced with streaks of caramel colour. You can see the majority of the egg through the display box which is a good technique and would encourage people to buy it. Overall, a nice egg which comes in a very popular and beloved flavour and it remains true to that flavour.”

Moser Roth Ripple Egg - Belgian White Chocolate and Forest Fruits

“This egg was also easy to crack. The taste is sweet, tart, buttery and fruity. The texture is quite soft, creamy and inviting and the chocolate is mostly fine. The mixture of the forest fruits is a nice twist. The aroma is one carrying vanilla and fruity overtones. The display and physical appearance of this egg was one of the most attractive in our opinion. The egg has a ripple effect, and the individual colour of each forest fruit is interlinked between the white shades. I feel for a white chocolate lover this egg would be very appealing and its eye catching appearance will make it a popular choice.”

Moser Roth Chocolate Lovers Duo Egg – Dark Chocolate

“There are two separate eggs in this set. They were easy to crack. The taste is bitter and salty with a grainy, melting texture. The cocoa composition is 71% which is a dark chocolate lovers dream. This egg tasted the part of very high quality cocoa sourced from Ecuador and Belgium. The Peruvian blue salt gives it a lovely kick. The aroma is one of strong cocoa as expected with dark chocolate. The design of the box is classic reflecting the simplicity of the pure dark chocolate within. The shape of these two eggs is very unique, almost exaggerated tear drops and compliment and mirror each other. This egg was a strong favourite.”

Áine’s Premium Easter Egg – Dark Chocolate

“This Irish made egg has a cocoa aroma and is really easy to crack. Rich and smooth with a pure unspoilt taste. A dark chocolate lover’s dream, this egg is not too sweet or sugary. It’s a perfect mixture of cocoa and milk. Not too dense, just the right thickness! It’s presented beautifully in a colourful wrapper. This egg is just irresistible!”

Runners up, who have each won a €200 Aldi Gift Card and a hamper of chocolate are:

Julie Burke, Loughrea, Co. Galway – Julie said that one of the reasons she married her husband is because he does not eat chocolate, of any kind… meaning she never has to share!

John Kelly, Stradbally, Co. Laois – John is a married father of four who said that if he said he loved chocolate that would be an understatement! Lockdown has taught himself and his family to be more creative in the kitchen with the kids.

Deirbhile Wilson, Dunboyne, Co. Meath – Deirbhile is currently working as an intern midwife, for which chocolate is the no.1 gift she receives regularly, making her (she says) an absolute expert on all things chocolate!

Congratulations yo the winners.

The above eggs are available in all of Aldi’s 145 stores nationwide.
